Dear Kate,
We had so much fun getting to know you better this month. You’re still spending a lot of the day asleep, but when you’re awake you are so sweet. You are such a happy, smiley baby. You love to get our attention by flashing us huge smiles; it’s a very effective trick! Once you have our attention, your eye contact is really remarkable. You’ve started cooing a lot so we have lots of little conversations where you tell us all about your day and how you’re feeling. You are definitely a social little one!
Unfortunately, you’re still having lots of tummy pains and we’re all just waiting for you to grow out of them. We hate seeing you so uncomfortable but it will be better soon, I promise! Our evenings are pretty hard too. You cry your poor little heart out every night starting at 5:30 either from exhaustion or tummy pains or colic or some other infant woe. Eventually you fall asleep though (usually not until a couple hours later…did I mention that the evenings are hard?) and wake up happy again the next morning. You have an excellent I’m-mad-as-heck-and-I’m-not-going-to-take-it-anymore cry too. We can usually avoid that one by keeping you well fed, well rested and out of harm’s (i.e. your brother’s) way, but your temper sure does come out if you have to get shots or anything else that disrupts your perfect little baby life.
Your sleep was great at the beginning of the month. For a while you were only waking up once a night and I felt so rested, but for the past couple of weeks you’ve been waking up 3 or 4 times a night again. Although I wouldn’t mind sleeping more during the night, it’s not so hard with you since I know this is another thing that you’ll grow out of soon enough so it’s easier to cherish our little midnight parties. Usually you’re up just long enough to get re-swaddled and fed a little bit and then you fall right back to sleep, which is easy enough.
We had a great first Christmas with you. Our Christmas was pretty low key because your brother had a stomach virus and we were all in survival mode. On Christmas morning, you happily watched as Nicky unwrapped all of your presents. You had so many Christmas visitors over the past couple of weeks, including lots of grandparents and aunts and uncles. Since your favorite place to sleep is in someone’s arms, you loved every minute of it and happily put up with being passed around from one person to the next. We had so much fun sharing you and introducing you to the family!
Can’t wait to see what next month will bring. We have so much fun ahead of us in the next couple of months! You’ll be growing up so quickly, but we’re trying to cherish and remember as much of this as we can. You’re so much fun!
Love you,
Mommy
